Every aspect of our media training will be shaped around your specific requirements. Courses can vary in length, delegate numbers and location, and we will work with you to create exactly the right balance of interview theory and practice.

We know it’s often difficult to secure long periods in the diaries of senior executives and we’re experts in organising short (e.g. two hour) workshops on a one-to-one basis that make the most of the time available.

We regularly run half-day courses for small groups of senior spokespeople and full-day or two-day training sessions for larger groups, as well as highly engaging workshops as part of seminars and conferences.

Your training can focus on one specific type of interview – for example print, radio or TV – or can include a combination of all three depending on your requirements.

We often help spokespeople to prepare for specific interviews including profile pieces in the national daily and Sunday newspapers, appearances on the breakfast TV sofas or more challenging interviews on the BBC’s Today and Newsnight programmes.

Thanks to the skill and flexibility of our trainers they can work in parallel to increase the number of practice interviews undertaken and ensuring delegates remain involved and engaged throughout.

And should your needs change on the day, or even mid-way through a training session, our team will swap one type of interview setting for another. It’s your media training session and it’s important you gain the maximum value from it.

Practice interviews

Your spokespeople can experience every type of interview they are ever likely to encounter, all of which can be set up at your offices or any other location of your choice, almost anywhere in the world:

  • Formal business-style one-to-one TV interviews
  • Informal sofa-style one-to-one TV interviews
  • Down-the-line (straight to camera) TV interviews
  • Location TV interviews standing outdoors or in your reception area
  • Pre-recorded ‘as-live’ interviews and short sound-bites
  • Studio-based and telephone radio interviews
  • One-to-one and telephone interviews with print or online journalists
  • Unexpected ‘ambush’ interviews
  • Press conferences
  • Addressing the assembled media in a crisis

Essential theory

The majority of a media training session will be dedicated to practice interviews, followed by playback and coaching from our expert trainers. The amount of interview ‘theory’ will depend on the experience of the delegates and will be tailored to your precise requirements.

As well as introducing less experienced delegates to the media, how journalists work and what they want from spokespeople, we will explain techniques to take control of an interview and deliver key messages and how to use voice and body language effectively, as well as offering advice on how to avoid a journalist’s tricks and traps.

Added value

We have devised a number of unique features, exercises and workshops that add real additional value to every media training session, heightening the realism and ensuring all delegates remain engaged throughout – from trainers working in parallel in order to increase the number of practice interviews undertaken to phone calls from newspaper journalists.

We’re always prepared to do more and go the extra mile. Please get in touch with us to find out we add more value than other media trainers.

Materials

In addition to the skills and confidence they need to give successful interviews, delegates will also take away their interviews on flash drives, along with a copy of our exclusive 24-page media interview skills guide full of practical tips and step-by-step advice. Delegates also receive a set of A6 cards covering every type of interview they will ever encounter and a wallet-sized reminder card. We can also follow up with a written report detailing each delegate’s strengths and areas for development – at no extra cost.

Hotline access

Your delegates will all receive ‘hotline’ access to our trainers for help and guidance when they’re called to give an interview for real. Everyone completing one of our media training courses will be invited to get in touch with us before any interview – we will advise on the key messages and undertake practice interviews on the phone, along with our feedback.

Unlike many other media training companies, there’s no time limit on this support and advice – it’s open-ended and offered at no extra charge.
